Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles.

Flooring
Sets a typical waste %. Change the waste to suit the job.
Printed on the box.

Typical waste, as a starting point: about 10% for straight-lay LVP, laminate, hardwood, tile and carpet, and 15% on a diagonal or herringbone. Rooms with many corners, closets and doorways waste more. Keep a box for repairs.

This is an estimate from the numbers you enter. It doesn't see the subfloor: leveling, patching or moisture work, or rooms changed during construction. Stairs, base and transitions are extra. Confirm on site before you order.

How it works

The flooring formulas.

  1. Room area

Each room, length times width. Add the rooms.

area = length × width, for each room
  2. Waste

For cuts at walls, doorways and the ends of rows.

    with waste = area × (1 + waste %)
  3. Boxes

What one box covers is printed on it.

boxes = with waste ÷ box coverage, rounded up
  4. Carpet

Carpet is sold by the square yard: 9 sq ft.

    square yards = with waste ÷ 9

Worked exampleRooms of 12 × 14 ft and 10 × 11 ft are 168 + 110 = 278 sq ft. With 10% waste, 305.8 sq ft. With 20 sq ft boxes: 305.8 ÷ 20 = 15.29, so 16 boxes, 320 sq ft.

Questions

Flooring questions.

How do I calculate flooring square footage?

Multiply each room's length by its width, then add the rooms. A 12 × 14 ft room is 168 square feet. Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Typical waste is about 10% for straight-lay LVP, laminate, hardwood, tile and carpet, and 15% on a diagonal or herringbone. Buy a little more for rooms with many corners and closets, and keep a box for repairs.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide the square feet with waste by what one box covers, and round up. 305.8 square feet with 20 square-foot boxes is 15.29, so 16 boxes.

How is carpet sold?

By the square yard, which is 9 square feet, cut from rolls usually 12 ft wide. Seams and the roll width set the real waste, so the flat 10% here is a starting point.

Is this an exact flooring order?

No. It's an estimate from the sizes you enter. Stairs, closets you left out, base and transitions are extra, and subfloor work isn't in it. Confirm on site before you order.
